Gus Elen

Music-hall singer. Born Ernest Augustine Elen at 103 Pulford Street, Pimlico. He started performing in public houses in 1891, singing songs about working-class life. Moving on to the stage, he became one of the most popular music-hall acts of the time. His best remembered songs include, 'It's a great big shame' and 'If it wasn't for the 'ouses in between'. Died at his home, Edith Villa, 3 Thurleigh Avenue, Balham.
