The theatre opened on 27th December, 1906 as The Hicks Theatre. It was built and named for the actor-manager and playwright Seymour Hicks. It came under new management in 1909 and was renamed as The Globe. Long running productions include 'There's a Girl in my Soup' and 'Daisy Pulls it Off'. In 1994, in anticipation of the opening of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre on the south bank, it was renamed in honour of the actor Sir John Gielgud.
