Gilbert Ledward

Categories: Sculpture

Sculptor. born Chelsea. Studied under EdouardLantéri. Served in WW1 initially in the artillery and then as a war artist. Died at 31 Queen's Gate.

Three other notable works in London: firstly the Guards monument at Horse Guards. Secondly: 'Awakening' - a lovely early bronze female nude in Roper’s Garden, which is very close to the house in which he was born (though, annoyingly, we can't find that address). Thirdly: a late work was a stone frieze for Barclays Bank in Old Broad Street. The building was demolished in 1995 and the frieze held by the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association. 2013 we learn at Gagarin Square that there are plans to put it on public show again in this new development in Southwark.
