George Grote, DCL, LLD

George Grote was born on 17 November 1794 ,in Clay Hall, Beckenham, Kent (now Greater London), the eldest son of George Grote (1762-1830) and Salina Mary Grote née Peckwell (1775-1845). On 27 December 1794 he was baptised in Beckenham.

Much information about this man can be found on his Wikipedia page, on the University of Cambridge website and on the Encyclopædia Britannica website

On 5 March 1820 he married Harriet Lewin (1792-1878) at St Mary the Virgin, Bexley, Kent (now Greater London), where in the marriage register he is shown as a bachelor residing in the parish of St Bartholomew by the Exchange, London, whilst his wife was described as a spinster of this parish.

In the 1841 census he was listed as a banker living at 4 Upper Eccleston Street, Belgravia, Middlesex (now Greater London), with his wife, a Charles & Jane Buller who were described of independent means, together with two male and five female servants.

He was shown as a landed proprietor, aged 56 years, in the 1851 census living at 12 Saville Row, Westminster, Middlesex (now Greater London), with his wife, together with a butler, a footman, a page, a housekeeper, a cook, a lady's maid, a housemaid and a scullery maid.

He was still described as a landed proprietor, aged 66 years and living at 12 Saville Row in the 1861 census, together with a butler, a cook and two housemaids.

When the 1871 census was undertaken he was shown as George Grote, D.C.L., L.L.D., Vice Chancellor of London and a landed proprietor, aged 76 years, still residing at 12 Saville Row, with his wife, his niece Mary Anna Eliza Grote (1845-1909), together with three male and five female domestic servants.

Probate records confirm that he died, aged 76 years, on 18 June 1871 at 12 Saville Row, and that on 14 July 1871 his will with two codicils was proved by his widow at the Principal Registry in London and his effects were shown as under £120,000.

Although he was an atheist, his body was buried in Westminster Abbey, London.
