George Devine

Actor and theatre director. Born George Alexander Cassady Devine in Hendon. He became interested in theatre while studying at Oxford and in 1932 was made president of the Oxford University Dramatic Society. After war service, he helped set up the Old Vic Theatre School and the Young Vic Company. At this time he was also acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon. In conjunction with Tony Richardson and George Goetschius, he took over the Royal Court Theatre in Chelsea and formed the English Stage Company, which encouraged new writers such as Arnold Wesker and Edward Bond. Died in London.
