Emily Davies

Suffragist and promoter of higher education for women. Born Sarah Emily Davies in Southampton. She edited a feminist publication and became active on the London School Board. She was instrumental in obtaining the admission of girls to secondary school examinations, and in 1869 co-founded Girton, the first women's college. Her involvement in the Suffrage movement led to her heading a delegation to parliament in 1906. Died at her home, 17 Glenmore Road, Belsize Park.
