Edward Monson, Jnr

Categories: Architecture

This Edward Monson would have been 40 when St Albans was built. His father (Edward Monson) was a civil engineer. and junior's architect son, Edward Charles Philip Monson would have been 15. So we are confident this is the right Monson.

Born Ipswich and trained in his father's office. Rose from Assistant Surveyor to the Acton Local Board in 1866 to Diocesan Surveyor to the Bishop of London, having set up an independent practice in 1870. Also architect to the Acton School Board 1875-1904, and a J.P. Retired in 1915.

Very active in Freemasonry.  Had 5 sons, 2 of which became architects: ECP and Harry Castle Hiett (1877-1961). The 3 Monson architects often worked together.

Other works in London: Sutton Estate in Chelsea; St Martin's Church, Hale Gardens, West Acton.

Most of our information comes from the the Victorian Web's page for Monson.
