Dr Annie McCall

One of the first women to qualify as a doctor, in 1885. Born Manchester. She studied abroad and in London. Once qualified she quickly started a clinic and school of midwifery in her own home at 165 (or 131 depending on source) Clapham Road. In 1889 with her cousin, Marion Ritchie, she founded the Clapham Maternity Hospital at at 41-3 Jeffreys Road, Stockwell, staffed entirely by women. It was closed due to WW2 damage in 1940 and McCall retired in 1941. Died Sussex.

Through her pioneering work in midwifery and childcare she achieved very high survival rates for mothers and children.
