Dorothy Goodman

Nurse working at Lewisham Hospital died in WW1, while working there.

Western Front Association gives: "Dorothy Cranfield Goodman was a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment. She was born in Paddington in the summer of 1891 and died in Lewisham aged 24 in the spring of 1916."

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, has undertaken further research on this person:

Nurse Dorothy Cranfield Goodman was one of the five children of Edwin Matthew Goodman (1866-1948) and Rebecca Goodman née Parker (1866-1924). Her birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1891 in the Paddington registration district.

The 1901 census shows her living at 63 Childebert Road, Tooting, with her parents and two siblings: Henry Goodman and Frank Goodman. Her father was described as a music publishing manager. In the 1911 census she is shown as residing at the nine roomed property, 63 Drakefield Road, Upper Tooting, with her parents and three siblings: Henry Goodman, Frank Goodman and George Goodman, together with a female general domestic servant. Her father was described as a director of a public company and her brother Henry was listed as a music publisher's assistant. The census also showed that her fourth, unnamed, sibling had died.

She became a nurse in the Voluntary Aid Detachment, and was attached to the Lewisham Military Hospital. She died, aged 24 years, on 4 April 1916 suffering from influenza and pneumonia and was buried on 8 April 1916 in Section 22, Grave 3692 in Harrow Cemetery, Pinner Road, Harrow, HA1 4JA.

She is also commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website.
