Dorothy (Doris) Eileen Reid

War dead non-military, WW2 i

Commemorated on a memorial as being a civilian who was killed in WW2. Includes mercantile marines and emergency services personnel.

Dorothy (Doris) Eileen Reid

Age 35, of 4 Gwynn House, Lower Sloane Street. Daughter of Caroline Hall (formerly Reid), of 6 Walsingham Mansions, Fulham Road, and of the late John Reid.

That's what Commonwealth War Graves says. We thought it incorrect and that it should read "... Daughter of Caroline Reid (formerly Hall) ..." but London Memorial suggests that, after giving birth to Doris, Caroline Reid may have been widowed and married a Mr Hall. That would work.

And that interpretation was confirmed when, in 2020, Andrew Behan researched the lady and found:-

Doris Eileen Reid (otherwise known as Dorothy) was born in 1909. She was the daughter of John Reid (1866-1920) and Caroline O'Shickle Reid née Roth (1888-1973). Her father died in 1920 and her mother was remarried to James Samuel Hall in 1923.

She died, aged 35 years, on 3 July 1944 as a result of enemy action when a V1 bomb fell on her home at 4 Gwynn House, Lower Sloane Street, London, SW3. She was buried on 7 July 1944 in a common grave (as a result of war operations), in the West of London and Westminster Cemetery, (now called Brompton Cemetery) Old Brompton Road, West Kensington.

Probate was granted on 23 November 1945 jointly to her mother (who lived at 6 Walsingham Mansions, Fulham Road, Chelsea), John Hubert Lambert and Constance Barbara Mona Jenkins. Her estate totalled £740-3s-4d.

She is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey, London.
