Pioneer participant in the Notting Hill Carnival. "11th August 2009 We are sad to report the passing of Desmond Bowen age 73, in London on 9th August following a long period of sickness. Desmond was a charming and modest man but his quiet influence in the pan world was significant over many years, both in Trinidad and London. He was a talented player and arranger, one of the earliest for Mangrove Steel Band, and many pan players, young and old will remember him fondly as a man who was generous with his time and skills, passing on his own unique arrangements and good advice to those who visited him at his Edgware Road home. A few days before his passing, Winston Findlay was invited by Desmond’s brother Ralph to play solo pan at his hospice bedside and chose the tune ‘If’ which Desmond had played at Winston’s wedding 20 years before. At the Engine Room event at Tabernacle last night soloist Daniel Louis spoke some moving words about Desmond from the stage and dedicated one of his pieces to the man, which was met with strong appreciation from a large audience. Rest in peace dear Desmond – the world is poorer for your loss. Annie Findlay"
