Arthur Aslett

Arthur Charles Richard Aslett was born on 17 September 1906, the eldest child of Arthur George Aslett (1882-1941) and Emily Ada Aslett née Burnett (1893-1949). His birth was registered in the Holborn registration district and when he was baptised on 7 October 1906 at St Mary's Church, Hoxton, the baptismal register shows the family living at 56 Galway Street, London, EC1 and that his father was a heel compressor.

When his brother, Frank Sidney Aslett (1908-1977) was baptised on 13 March 1908 the baptismal register records the family living at 43 Radnor Street, Hoxton.

His other brother, William Frederick Aslett (1910-1990) was baptised on 22 March 1911 and the baptismal register shows the family residing at 12 Fairbank Street, Shoreditch. This address is confirmed in the 1911 census.

His sister, Kathleen Florence Aslett (1912-1990) was baptised on 6 November 1912 and the baptismal register shows that they had moved once again to 60 East Road, Shoreditch.

In 1931 he married Mary McCarthy and electoral registers in 1932 show them living at 25 Tibberton Square, Islington.

He was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery, service number 1776506, and was attached as a driver in their 227 Anti Aircraft Unit when he was killed, aged 35 years, in a German air raid on the night of 10/11th May 1941.

He was buried in a joint grave in Section L.5. Grave R.N.57261, in Abney Park Cemetery, 215 Stoke Newington High Street, London, N16 0LH and he is also commemorated there on Panel 9 of the Screen Wall adjacent to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Cross of Sacrifice.
