Our colleague, Andrew Behan, states that Albert Sciver was born on 27 May 1903, the elder of the two children of John Sciver (1874-1962) and Kate Sciver née Taylor (1872-1948). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1903 in the Lambeth Registration District, London. On 5 July 1903 he was baptised in St Philip's Church, Lambeth, where in the baptismal register his date of birth was recorded, that his family lived at 35 St Mary's Square, Lambeth and that his father was a carver.
When his father completed his 1911 census return form, he showed him as aged 7 years, living in a six roomed property at 31 Colehill Lane, Fulham, London, with his parents, his sister Edith Hewish Scriver (1905-1996), his maternal grandmother Charlotte Taylor - aged 67 years, his maternal aunt Dora Taylor, aged 24 years and a skirt hand (dressmaker), together with a male boarder. His father described himself as a head waiter (club).
He was shown as Albert Sciver, aged 18 years and 1 month, a whole time chemical student, on the 1921 census return form completed by his father. He was still living at 31 Colehill Lane, Fulham, with his parents and his sister who was still in full time education. His father described himself as a steward at the Junior United Service Club, 11 Charles Street, London, SW1.
He married Violet Gertrude Smith (1901-1963) in the 2nd quarter of 1926 in the Wandsworth Registration District, London. They had three children: John Derek Hewish Scriver (1929-2020); Jocelyn A. H. Scriver (b.1931) and Margaret P. H. Scriver (b.1934).
Electoral registers from 1928 to 1931 show him and his wife listed at Corcreevy, Woodmansterne Road, Coulsdon, Surrey and in 1932 at 50 Woodmansterne Road, Coulsdon. The 1936 to 1939 electoral registers show him and his wife were living at Albany Lodge, The Avenue, Tadworth, Surrey but were also business ratepayer voters listed at 28 Victoria Street, London, SW1.
In the 1939 England and Wales Register he is shown as a consulting analytical chemist, living at 901 Keyes House, Dolphin Square, London, SW1, with an Olive Mary Sherrard (1910-2001) who was also a consulting analytical chemist.
On 23 April 1945 he and his wife were divorced and he married Olive Mary Sherrard in the 2nd quarter of 1945 in the Henley Registration District, Oxfordshire. His wife had been born as Olive Mary Scherer but her family changed their surname to Sherrard.
Electoral registers in 1945 show him and his new wife continued to reside at 901 Keyes House, Dolphin Square but from 1946 to 1960 they are both shown at 906 Collingwood House, Dolphin Square, London, SW1 and from 1962 to 1964 at 511 Rodney House, Dolphin Square.
Telephone directories from 1951 to 1957 also list him at Blagdon, Peppard Common, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire and from 1958 to 1981 at 21 The Heath, Chaldon, Caterham, Surrey.
His death, aged 78 years, was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1981 in the Surrey South-Eastern Registration District. Probate records confirm that his address had been 21 The Heath, Chaldon, Caterham, Surrey, and that he died on 25 August 1981. Probate was granted on 12 November 1981 and his effects totalled £22,337.
He is shown as 'MAYOR COUNCILLOR A.SCIVER.BSc..F.R.I.C.' on the City of Westminster Churchill Gardens opening plaque attached to Chaucer House, Churchill Gardens Road, London, SW1.
