Cavendish House, Clapham

Categories: Property

From Clapham Society, writing about Henry Cavendish: "... like his father he was passionately interested in science .. established his own laboratory. On his father’s death in 1783 he moved this from their London home to a large mansion in Clapham, the site of which is at the junction of the present Cavendish Road and Clapham Common South Side. Henry used the upper rooms of the house as an observatory, the drawing room as a laboratory and had a forge in an adjoining room. The house became known as Cavendish House. It was demolished in 1905."

London Picture Archive has a 1906 photo from the garden, showing the house in a very sorry state and "The house has been demolished and Englewood Road has been built on the site."

From Borough Photos: ".. Henry Cavendish, who lived here between 1782 -1810."

From Layers of London "The builder, Thomas Cubitt and his family lived here 1827 - 1832."

The house is shown on this 1873 map.
