Elizabeth I's last Archbishop of Canterbury. The palace used as a summer retreat by the Archbishops of Canterbury was in Croydon and here in 1596 Whitgift founded an eponymous school.

Memorable day of the year to die, shared with E. F. Benson. While Mary Hughes, J. E. Stanley Lewis and little Alfred E. Batt were all born on a leap day.
