Bermondsey Settlement

The Settlement Movement began in England and the U.S.A in the 1880s and peaked around the 1920s. Its aim was to get the rich and poor in society to live more closely together in an interdependent community. It established 'settlement houses' in poor urban areas, in which middle-class volunteers would live, and share their knowledge and culture, in the hope of alleviating the poverty of their low-income neighbours. The Bermondsey Settlement was founded by the  Reverend John Scott Lidgett. Doctor Alfred Salter and his wife Ada were prominent members.
