Politician and actress. Born Glenda May Jackson in Birkenhead. In 1992 she retired from acting to pursue another career in politics. Elected as Member of Parliament for Hampstead and Highgate in1992, she was appointed junior Minister for Transport in 1997.

Glenda May Jackson was born on 9 May 1936, at 151 Market Street, Birkenhead, Cheshire, (now Merseyside), the daughter of Harry Jackson (1907-1980) and Nellie Joan Jackson née Pearce (1909-1990). Her birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1936 in the Birkenhead registration district, Cheshire.

She was listed at the latter address as Glenda Jackson in telephone directories between 1964 and 1967. They had one child, Daniel Pearce Jackson Hodges, who was born on 7 March 1969 and whose birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1969 in the Lewisham registration district. They divorced in 1976.

In the 1978 Queen's Birthday Honours List she was, as an actress, made an Ordinary Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).
