Sir Alan Herbert

Author and politician. Born Alan Patrick Herbert at Ashtead Lodge, Ashtead, Leatherhead. He was called to the bar, but never practised. Joined Punch magazine as a writer in 1924 and went on to write the libretti for many comic operas, notably 'Bless the Bride'. He was an independent M.P. from 1935 to 1950, introducing a bill that became the Matrimonial Causes Act. Knighted in 1945. Died at his home 12 Hammersmith Terrace.
