Site: Vauxhall Motors factory (2 memorials)

SW8, Wandsworth Road, Sainsburys Nine Elms supermarket

The first plaque was installed in 2003 by Vauxhall Motors at Sainsbury’s previous store on this site, to mark the centenary of the first sale of a Vauxhall car manufactured on the site (then 90-92 Wandsworth Road).

When Sainsburys rebuilt the supermarket the 2003 plaque was considered too ‘worn and tired looking’ to re-erect so it was moved to Vauxhall's Heritage Centre in Luton. A new plaque was cast, paid for by Barratt London, the developer of Nine Elms Point, of which Sainsburys is part. You can see it in our photo, at the northern entrance to the shop, set into the wall to the right of the doorway.

Our information comes from Vauxhall History.

We thank our colleague Alan Patient for these photos.
