William Wallace funeral, 2005

Erection date: 23/8/2015

Inscription

Wallace plaque, St Bartholomew the Great
This plaque commemorates the funeral service held in this church for Sir William Wallace on the 700th anniversary of his execution at Smithfield Elms on 23rd August 1305.

David R. Ross, Convenor of the Society of William Wallace, walked from Robroyston in Glasgow to Westminster Bridge, the route taken seven centuries before by Wallace and his captors.

On 23rd August 2005, thousands of Wallace's fellow Scots walked from Westminster Hall to the Wallace memorial at Smithfield, the final route along which Wallace was dragged to his death.

A solemn service for Wallace then took place within these walls led by the Revd Alan Sorenson and the Revd Martin Dudley.

Donated by the Society of William Wallace to mark the tenth anniversary of the funeral service, 23rd August 2015.

The walk from Scotland is documented at Crann Tara.

Site: St Bartholomew's Church Gatehouse (4 memorials)

EC1, West Smithfield, St Bartholomew's church

The restoration of this church was the first major work by Aston Webb. His brother, Edward, was churchwarden at the time. Webb and colleagues had the WW1 memorial installed, which includes the name of his son, Philip.

The small Wallace plaque is about halfway along the path from the gatehouse to the church, on the north side.

Photos of the 2015 "Ceremony Of The Widow’s Sixpence" plus early photos of the site at Spitalfields Life. And more at A London Inheritance.

In the 1940s this gatehouse served as a, very small, rectory for the church.
