Victoria Station - war memorial - west

Inscription

{At the top of the plaque:}
In honour of five thousand six hundred and thirty five members of the staff of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Co. who joined the forces of the Crown during the war of 1914 – 1918 and of whom those whose names appear below gave their lives for victory in that great struggle to secure the liberty of the world.

‘Their name liveth for evermore.’

{A list of 531 names in 5 columns in alphabetical sequence. See Subjects commemorated for the names.}

{On the brass plaque below the list of names:}
And to the memory of 626 men of the Southern Railway who gave their lives in the 1939 - 1945 war.

"... and of whom those whose names ..." - we just don't write English like that any more, thank heavens.

SW1, Victoria Station

Until after WW1 this station was home to two railway companies so it has two war memorials, which we’ve denominated as 'east' and 'west'.
