Fountain

Trotter's trough - SW4

Erection date: 1881

Inscription

{On both long sides:}
Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association

{The northern end has lost a plaque. The southern end is inscribed:}
In memoriam Robert Trotter Esq, 1877

MDFCTA says this was originally erected in 1881 outside The Plough in Clapham, which we think might have been at 156 Clapham High Street, to the east of the trough's current site.

This trough is fenced in, on its own, in quite a large wooded pasture.

We feel the date probably gives a clue to what this substantial fountain was erected to commemorate, but we can't think what. Any ideas?
