Plaque

Purley air crash

Erection date: 2006

Inscription

In memory of the pilot and seven passengers who lost their lives in the crash of Imperial Airways De Havilland 34 Airliner G-EBBX near the site of this memorial on Christmas Eve 1924.

This plaque and cross were placed here by Croydon Airport Society and Lower End Kingsdown Avenue Residents' Association at a service of dedication in 2006 to commemorate the refurbishment of the memorial.

The plaque refers to the memorial being 'refurbished'. Diamond Geezer explains that previously there was a cross painted on one of the pillars, often obscured by plants.

This Getty image shows the cashed plane. In that photo, behind the policeman, you can see the railings that ran along the edge of the cliff - these look to be the exact same railings as are there today.
