This plaque commemorates the opening by Her Royal Highness The Princess Margaret, CI, GCVO on the 15th May 1958 of the new out-patients department, being the first stage of the reconstruction of Lewisham Hospital.

CI is the Imperial Order of the Crown of India, which ceased to be awarded after India's independence in 1947. It was only given to women, and Princess Margaret was one of the last to receive it. Queen Elizabeth II was the only surviving former holder. GCVO is the Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
