Hendon war memorial - WW2

Erection date: 2015

Inscription

{Erected low, in front of the south face, a stone block with a plaque on top:}
This memorial is also dedicated to the memory of those inhabitants of Hendon, both members of the services and civilians, who lost their lives in the 2nd Word War, 1939 - 1945.

{On the north face a large copper-coloured panel:}
In grateful memory of those from Hendon who gave their lives in the Second World War 1939 - 1945.
{List of 228 names across 4 columns, in alphabetical sequence. See Subjects commemorated for the list.}
"Let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten".

The Listing entry informs: "After the Second World War a stone block was added to the south side of the memorial at the base of plinth to accommodate a dedicatory inscription to those killed in that conflict. ... On the north side of the plinth a brass plaque was added in 2015 to record the names of those lost in the Second World War."

NW4, Watford Way

Another unpleasant site to visit: on a large traffic island in the middle of the A41. It was only after we'd dodged the traffic that we realised the pedestrian underpass allows safe access. We take these risks so you don't have to.

The original WW1 monument was unveiled on St George's Day in 1922. The Listing entry informs: "... originally located some distance to the N near St Joseph’s Convent but was moved to its current location in 1962 as a result of a road-widening scheme." That convent is between St Joseph’s Grove and the A41 so it was probably the creation of this horrible road that caused the monument to be moved to be in the centre of this horrible road.
