Site: Giltspur Street compter (1 memorial)

EC1, Giltspur Street

Discovering London took great delight in proving that the "cells" in the pub next door, the Viaduct, are, contrary to urban myth, nothing to do with either this compter or Newgate Prison, which used to be on the southern side of this junction. These "cells" are just cellars for the beer etc. that the pub needed to stock, and keep behind lock and key.
