Conscientious Objectors WW1 - Haringey

Erection date: 15/5/2019

Inscription

To commemorate all those war resisters who gathered here at Salisbury Corner to oppose the First World War, 1914 -1918, and particularly the 350 brave Haringey men who were Conscientious Objectors.

{On a nearby small steel plaque:}
Slate memorial unveiled 15 May 2019
Commissioned by Haringey First World War Peace Forum with thanks to:
Will O'Leary, Lettering Artist
Harringay Traders Association
London Borough of Haringey
The National Lottery Heritage Fund

Yes, there are two different (but correct) spellings of the name of the borough, even on the same plaque (Harringay / Haringey).

Actor Jim Broadbent was at the unveiling and read the words of Harry Phipps, one of the 350 Haringey WW1 conscientious objectors: "‘War can only become impossible when a sufficient number of people believing in the brotherhood of man refuse to take up arms against each other".

Site: Conscientious Objectors WW1 - Haringey (1 memorial)

N4, Green Lanes, The Salisbury

This site was chosen for the plaque because anti-war meetings were held here at the outbreak of war in August 1914.

The plaque was brought to our attention by Trevor Blake, an American friend, who has published 'Hyde Park Orator' by Bonar Thompson, one of the conscientious objectors.
