The houses each side were built about 1680. Boston House built in 1740, on the site of a previous mansion lies in the picturesque old square behind large iron gates.
Into this garden Thackeray in "Vanity Fair" describes Becky Sharp as throwing the dictionary.

Our photograph manages to exclude the Great West Road which is constantly thundering nearby.
