Inscription

Charlotte Despard (1844 - 1939), suffragette, socialist, pacifist, Irish nationalist. She donated this building to Battersea Labour.
Battersea Labour Party

From Penelope J. Corfield: this was unveiled "exactly one hundred years after the date when she stood as the Labour Party candidate in North Battersea in the 1918 general election." That site has some splendid photos of Despard in her still-battling old age.
