This object is known as an armillary sphere, or astrolab - a skeletal celestial sphere showing the rotation of the heavenly bodies, around the Earth, or later, the Sun. Other memorial astrolabs can be seen at Belgrave Square, Torrington Square and Trinity Square, Sutton.
