Globe Theatre plaque

Erection date: /10/1909

Inscription

{The relief depicts Bankside early in the C17th, showing the Globe Theatre, St Saviour’s (which became Southwark Cathedral) and old London Bridge. The medallion bust of Shakespeare is 'after the Droeshout portrait'.}

{Below Shakespeare's bust, as if on its plinth:}
Here stood the Globe Playhouse of Shakespeare, 1598 - 1613.

{At the bottom right of the relief:}
Wm. Martin MA, LLD, FSA - designer, Ed. Lanteri - S.

{Along the bottom of the plaque:}
Commemorated by the Shakespeare Reading Society of London and by subscribers in the United Kingdom and India.

This plaque was fixed to the wall of the brewery Barclay, Perkins & Co. It was unveiled by Herbert Beerbohm Tree who was President of the Shakespeare Reading Society which erected the plaque. We understand that The London Illustrated News of 9 October 1909, CXXXV, 500, contains photographs of this tablet when first erected.

SE1, Park Street

Even after this plaque was erected in 1909 the arguments about where the Globe had stood continued.  A (very poorly) digitised newspaper article from 1910 presents the arguments.  The plaque erectors were vindicated in 1989 when excavations revealed a portion of the foundations in the car-park behind the plaque.
