Awarded the VC for his heroism on 28 October 1918, age 21, while serving in the Northumberland Fusiliers. "When the advance was held up he ran forward firing his Lewis gun from the hip, he captured over 160 in this action. His conspicuous valour and initiative in the face of intense rifle fire was beyond praise. (Casa Van, Italy)". Freemason at: №4246, Garrick Lodge.
