Serjeant William Jared. Born on the 24th May 1894 in Islington, London, the son of George and Esther Sophia Jared, née Mitchell. His father was a hairdresser. He was baptised on the 10th June 1894 at St. Mary Parish Church, Islington and the family were living at 12 York Road, Islington. They were still at this address on the 1901 census. In October 1910 he was appointed as an Assistant Postman in the London Postal Service. The 1911 census shows the family living at 47 Ramsey Street, West Hendon and his occupation was G.P.O. Telegraph Messenger. He joined the 8th Battalion (Post Office Rifles) of the London Regiment and had two service numbers, 2897 and 370938. He entered France on the 18th March 1915 and was killed in action on the 7th October 1916, aged 22 years and is buried in Grave I.H.38.in the Warlencourt British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. His next of kin were his parents who were then living at 263 Broadway, West Hendon. He was posthumously awarded The 1914-15 Star, The British War Medal and The Victory Medal.
