Born as Swarup Nehru into a prominent Indian political family (brother - Jawaharlal Nehru; niece - Indira Gandhi; grand-nephew - Rajiv Gandhi) She was herself a powerful diplomat and politician.
8th President of the United Nations General Assembly 1953-4; 6th Governor of Maharashtra 1962-4, and the first woman appointed to either post. In the time between those two she was High Commissioner for India in the UK 1954-1961.
Pandit was sent to London as India's most important diplomat after serving as India's envoy to the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Nations.
Her first marriage was not approved by her family who ended it. Her second husband was Ranjit Sitaram Pandit (1921–44).
