V1 Flying Bomb - Walthamstow

Categories: Tragedy

The bomb fell just before 10am when shopping was in full swing. Its approach was heard and people in the vicinity took what shelter they could. Some dived into shops and doorways, others into an archway between two shops which led to a motor coach garage. The bomb burst practically opposite this archway, collapsing the two floors above and burying people in the debris. 19 people died at the scene, with a further three deaths in hospital. 144 other casualties were recorded. The photograph shows the site before the bomb fell.
