Tonbridge Club

Group

From Tony Jauncey: "Tonbridge club in Judd Street was founded after WW2 by a local vicar for the boys of King's Cross and surrounding area, to get them off the street and channel their energy into worthwhile pursuits. I used to attend there in the late 60s and early 70s to practice karate. I studied under Tataso Suzuki, one of the first Japanese masters to come to this country. I remember that it had a very antiquated gym, with several boxing rings."

The building was disused for some years but in Summer 2007 it reopened, after a refurbishment, as a health and creative arts centre run by Central YMCA, the target audience being the local young people so - a return to its original function.
