His father was a Physician who also served as a surgeon in the Royal Artillery. The 1861 census shows him as a scholar at the Grammar School in St Margaret's Street, Rochester, Kent.

On 25 September 1869 he married Anne Whiston Allan, a daughter of a clergyman, at The Parish Church of St Margaret's, Plumstead. His occupation was listed as clerk in an assurance company. The 1871 census shows him living with his wife, daughter and mother-in-law, Annie Allan, together with a cook, a housemaid and a nurse, at 9 Vicarage Gardens, Kensington. His occupation was recorded as a clerk in the Eagle Insurance Company. The 1881 census shows that he, his wife, six children and his mother-in-law had moved to 8 Vicarage Gate, Kensington, where they also had a parlour-maid, a housemaid, a nurse, an under-nurse and an under-housemaid living in the property. The 1891 census shows him, his wife, five of their sons and his mother-in-law still at 8 Vicarage Gate and he was employing a cook, a child's-maid, a parlour-maid, a house-maid and an under house-maid. His occupation was still a clerk at the Eagle Insurance Company.
