Sir John Gilbert

Born Blackheath. Illustrator and painter. He was closely associated with the Old Watercolour Society, becoming president in 1871. He also achieved fame as an illustrator of Shakespeare’s works and as a contributor to the Illustrated London News. He was knighted in 1872. Died Ivy House, Vanbrugh Park, Blackheath.
