Sir Alfred Butt

Theatre impressario, Conservative politician, racehorse owner. Born London. Started as an accountant at Harrods and then moved to the Palace Theatre Cambridge Circus, becoming MD in 1906. It was here that he introduced Pavlova in 1909. He expanded his business taking on other theatres including the Victoria Palace where he built a new theatre.

He was an MP for many years but his political career ended in disgrace following a financial scandal. His racing interests occupied him in later years, which probably explains his place of death: Newmarket.
