Sapper Charles Lascelles Still

Charles Lascelles Still was born on 26 February 1915, the son of Francis Albourne Still (1867-1942) and his second wife Sarah Anne Eliza Still née Elliott (1890-1984). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1915 in the Chertsey registration district, Surrey. His father was a publisher's clerk.

He married Ada Ruth Parker (1915-2009) in the Surrey North Eastern registration district and they had four children whose births were all registered in the same registration district: Colin C. Still in the 2nd quarter of 1935; Valerie R. Still in the 2nd quarter of 1937; Terence D. Still in the 4th quarter of 1940 and Barbara A. Still in the 2nd quarter of 1942.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register he was shown as living at 14 Waters Road, in the Municipal Borough of Malden and Coombe (now the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames), with his wife, who now showed her name as Ruth Ada Still, together with their two children. His occupation was recorded as a commercial motor driver and his wife as on unpaid domestic duties.

He was serving as a Sapper in 272 Field Company of the Royal Engineers, service number 14564939, when he was killed, aged 29 years, on 26 September 1944. His body was buried initially in Plot 6, Row O, Grave 9, in the Coriano Ridge British Empire Cemetery, Via Piane, 4 - 47853 Coriano (RN) Emilia Romagna, Italy, but was subsequently exhumed and reburied in Plot 19, Row C, Grave 4

He is shown as Still C L on the Surbiton war memorial, in Ewell Road, Surbiton, KT6. He is also commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website that incorrectly shows his age as 30 years.
