Awarded the VC for his heroism on 28-29 April 1917, age 20, while serving in the Honourable Artillery Company. "His superb courage, quick decision and sound judgement were beyond praise. A splendid personal example, which inspired others to continue during more than 30 hours of continuous battle. (Gavrelle, France)". Freemason at: №569, Fitzroy Lodge.
