Mulberry Harbours

Categories: Armed Forces

Temporary portable harbours developed by the United Kingdom in WW2 for the rapid offloading of vehicles onto beaches. They were used mainly during the Normandy landings in June 1944. Designed by Major Allan Beckett, from an idea by Winston Churchill, who was determined never to repeat the disastrous 1915 amphibious landings on beaches during the Gallipoli Campaign.
