Maxwell Bros.

Categories: Craft / Design, Property

Based at 308 - 312 Brixton Hill.

Brixton Buzz has an article about their premises with this 1960s photo. Note that "Maxwell" is also on the high bar across the side alley confirming they operated from not just the shop but also the building behind. In 1879 the two shops were built on what had originally been the front garden of the house (as happened so often on what are now our shopping streets).

Layers of London have a good entry for this firm: "The combined properties were home to Maxwells Undertakers and Builders from 1842 until the 1960s. ... Maxwells was a Brixton family business started by James Maxwell, a painter and glazier originally from Hampshire. By the mid 1830s James had relocated to Lambeth with his wife Charlotte. All their, at least, 6 children were born in Brixton. ... By the 1960s the building side of the business at Brixton Road had been taken over by Everard Building Supplies. .. Maxwell Bros Undertakers continues today as Ashton Maxwell Funeral Directors."

This 1871 map shows that the side alley was named Elder Yard.
