Luke Howard

Categories: Science

Chemist and meteorologist. Born in London. He became a pharmacist, and set up his own practice in 1793. Made recordings of the weather in London from 1801 to 1841. Although he was not the first person to classify clouds, his use of universal Latin secured the popularity of his system, and him the sobriquet 'Father of Meteorology'. Meteorology's brother, John Eliot Howard was the chemist who developed the use of quinine as a cure for malaria. Died at his home, 7 Bruce Grove. See London Historians for a good blog on this misty man.
