Lord Reith of Stonehaven, Sir John Reith

Categories: TV & Radio

Countries: Scotland

First Director-General of the BBC. Born Stonehaven, Kincardineshire. At 6' 6" he was an imposing man with a great talent for managing and leading organisations. He played an important role in the D-Day landings but was disappointed that Churchill did not give him more to do in the war and despite his successes at the BBC, looking back on his life he felt he had achieved very little compared with what he could have done. Died in Edinburgh after a fall.
