Virtuoso violist. Born in West Hartlepool. Initially he studied the violin in Leipzig and at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He was encouraged to take up the viola instead, and rapidly became one its best known exponents. Many composers including Arnold Bax, Gustav Holst and William Walton wrote pieces for him. Appointed C.B.E. in 1950. Died at his home 42 Marryat Road, Wimbledon.
