Leopold von Hoesch

Categories: Politics & Administration

Countries: Germany

German ambassador from 1932 to 1936. Well-liked by British politicians but his relationship with Hitler was not good. Hitler was probably close to recalling him but he died in office, aged 55. Unlike his dog he died of natural causes (heart failure). He was given a full diplomatic funeral with a 19-gun salute in St James's Park. The picture is from a video of von Hoesch's funeral procession. As the swastikaed coffin was carried by Grenadier Guards along the Mall the terrace outside the Embassy was crowded with von Hoesch's staff giving the Nazi salute.
