Ken Russell

Film, stage and television director. Born Henry Kenneth Alfred Russell at 31 Belnont Road, Southampton. He studied photography before moving to television. Here he specialised in films about famous composers including Elgar, Delius and Richard Strauss. In the cinema he had great successes with films such as 'Women in Love', 'The Music Lovers', 'The Devils' and The Who's 'Tommy'. In the theatre he directed several well known operas, but his production of the rarely performed Gilbert and Sullivan operetta 'Princess Ida' for English National Opera, received generally appalling reviews. Died at his home, 43 Vitre Gardens, Lymington, Hampshire.
