Kate Greenaway

Illustrator of children's books and poet. Born 21 Cavendish Street N1 (now entirely post-war blocks of flats). She and her family moved to Upper Street in 1852. She worked for London branch of Marcus and Ward, illustrated Valentine's Day cards. Illustrations first appeared in children's book Under the Window to great success. Created a unique view of the English countryside, mainly from time spent there in her childhood, summers in Ralston in Nottinghamshire.

In the 1880s she bought a plot of land in Frognal NW3 and commissioned Norman Shaw to design her home with a studio for her work at the top, turned to catch the northern light. In his later years John Ruskin became a great fan and had a 20-year correspondence with Greenaway.
