John Harrison (clocks)

Categories: Craft / Design, Science

Inventor of the marine chronometer. Born Yorkshire. Died London. Buried at St John's Church, Hampstead, strangely, since he died in Red Lion Square and had no connections with Hampstead.

The picture source website tells the story of the longitude prize and the marine chronometer and has pictures of the various versions.

Due to changes in the calendar his date of birth can be either 3 April (new style) or 24 March (old style). At the time of his birth, the date would have been 24 March. We are only labouring this point because Harrison happened also to die on 24 March.
